Over two days of intensely practical talks and workshops, Hugh will be sharing some top tips and showing us how we can be more lexical in our outlook whatever material is used in class. We’ll be looking at what we do when we teach vocabulary and grammar, listening and speaking. There’ll be 4 input sessions, 4 live lessons, 4 Q&A sessions and a final Wine&Cheese party.

About the speaker:

Hugh Dellar is a London-based teacher and teacher trainer with over twenty years experience in the field. He has taught all ages and levels, both in the UK and also in Indonesia, where he lived for four years. He worked for University of Westminster for 18 years, but is now the co-founder of Lexical Lab and has recently co-written the methodology book Teaching Lexically for Delta Publishing. He is the co-author of two five-level General English series, Innovations, Outcomes and Perspectives published by National Geographic Learning, as well as numerous papers and articles for many ELT publications.

Hugh has given teacher training and development sessions in over twenty countries including Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Spain, Russia, Italy, Japan and Thailand. He has spoken on such wide-ranging topics as the nature of English as a Lingua Franca, the uses and abuses of corpora, approaches to teaching grammar and vocabulary, as well as many others.

Day 1, November 2, 2018

09:30-10:00 Participants registration and welcome coffee

10:00-11:30 Session 1: Teaching Vocabulary

We’ll be looking at how best to go through answers to vocabulary exercises, the problems with pre-teaching and why meaning is only a small part of the problem. We’ll explore how to explain, exemplify and expand. We’ll look at why some questions are better than others and we’ll consider how to help students shoulder the burden of memory.

11:30-12:00 Coffee-break

12:00-13:00 Workshop 1: a live Advanced-level language class based on Session 1. The study and practice of vocabulary.

13:00-13:30 Questions and Answers 1

13:30-15:00 Lunch time

15:00-16:30 Session 2: Teaching Grammar

In the afternoon session, we’ll look at how to avoid death by grammar lecture, why shorter is (sometimes) better, how to correct in a way that avoids digging holes, and what we do when going through grammar exercises. We’ll workshop ways we can go deeper into what we get in the grammar sections in our books and we’ll also be considering how teaching vocabulary better leads to better grammar outcomes too.

16:30-17:00 Coffee-break

17:00-18:00 Workshop 2: a live Advanced-level language class based on  Session 2. The study and practice of some grammar.

18:00-18:30 Questions and Answers 2

Day 2, November 3, 2018

10:00-11:30 Session 3: Teaching Listening

Today we think about how hearing problems can make listening more difficult for learners – and explore different ways we can help students hear better. We look at how we can use the usual structure of a listening lesson in a way that focuses more on the actual language contained within the texts – and we explore the links between pronunciation and listening better.

11:30-12:00 Coffee-break

12:00-13:00 Workshop 3: a live Advanced-level language class based on  listening.

13:00-13:30 Questions and Answers 3

13:30-15:00 Lunch time

15:00-16:30 Session 4: Teaching Speaking

In the afternoon session, we’ll look at what we can do to help students get better at speaking – apart from just giving them opportunities to speak. We’ll discuss why some kinds of speaking go further than others, why working from what our students try to say means more grammar, not less – and what we can do as teachers before, during and after student speaking slots.

16:30-17:00 Coffee-break

17:00-18:00 Workshop 4: a live Advanced-level language class based on speaking.
